about

[Loah] I didn’t know of Johnson before this project and she was such a find! Her two poems I included are so uplifting and speak very euphemistically to the immense challenges she surely faced as an African American intellectual in the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. But also to this gently gorgeous, feminine softness in transcending everything. They very much resonated with me on many levels. Your World was actually written in the 60s, so it’s the other exception to the 1920s rule, but it so fitted the project and I loved it so much that I had to include it.

lyrics

Your world is as big as you make it.
I know, for I used to abide
In the narrowest nest in a corner,
My wings pressing close to my side.

But I sighted the distant horizon
Where the skyline encircled the sea
And I throbbed with a burning desire
To travel this immensity.

I battered the cordons around me
And cradled my wings on the breeze,
Then soared to the uttermost reaches
With rapture, with power, with ease!
